Terry Michler On “Total Soccer vs Title Soccer”

espana world cup champions 2010Regular contributor Terry Michler, Head Coach of the CBC Cadets, is the winningest High School Coach in the USA and the founder of the CBC Dutch Touch Soccer Academy in St Louis. He offers his thoughts on the Spanish win the World Cup.

Within the first few minutes of the broadcast of the Championship game of the 2010 World Cup, Martin Tyler mentions whether it will be ‘total soccer’ or ‘title soccer’ for the Dutch. Spain answered that question rather convincingly during the next 120 minutes of play as they put their stamp on the game. It was the Spanish 11 that demonstrated ‘total soccer’ that has forever been associated with Dutch football. The Dutch, in their quest of ‘title soccer’, failed to produce anything close to resembling the style of play that we have come to expect from the Oranje. It was a most inopportune time to produce such a haphazard performance. In each of the previous games, there was always the feeling that the next game would produce more of the Dutch quality in the game, and then when the Final rolled around, they fail to produce with their last chance.

It was the Spanish who played the ‘dutch’ game with fluid movements of passing and interchanging of positions. It was short, quick, crisp, meaningful passes that always landed safely on the foot of a teammate in an open ‘pocket’ of space. It was cat and mouse and the Dutch struggled to catch up with the passes. Positional play was also very important to the Spanish attack as they could always find a player with space on the wing, and at the right time, play a through ball to a player breaking in on goal. They defended with high pressure and forced turnover after turnover, never allowing the Dutch any chance to establish any rhythm in their buildup. The only chances for the Dutch came on the break, and then they failed to take advantage. So, it was the Spaniards who demonstrated the ‘total soccer’ that the Dutch had made famous in years gone by. Johan Cruyff said before the Final that Spain played more of a ‘dutch‘ game than the Dutch themselves.

When Bert van Marwijk interviewed with the KNVB for the National Team job, he told them his goal was to win the World Cup. He knew all the history of the Dutch National teams and how they imploded over the years and he took the approach that a change was necessary to have a chance for the title. His approach yielded wonderful results as they did not lose a game until the Final. But the ‘title soccer’ approach only got them to the same point of disappointment that they have been before, but not beyond. So, at the end of the day, when the dust settles, it was Spain that produced the best soccer and even had Holland scored on one of their chances, it would have been an injustice to the quality that the Spanish produced, against all the recklessness of the Dutch.

On a personal note, being a staunch supporter of the Oranje, Dutch Vision and ‘Total Soccer’, it is extremely disappointing that they could not deliver the goods at the right moment. It is ironic because one of the biggest coaching points in the dutch philosophy is to play in the right moment – to do the right thing, in the right way at the right time to the right place. To pass the ball at the right time, with the right speed, to the right place, in the right way — that is the basis of their play. Unfortunately, with the whole world watching, waiting and wanting to see the best of the best, they failed to hold up their end of the deal. It was a moment that could erase the emptiness of ’74 and ’78 and put that first star on their jersey, but to me, more importantly to show the world their quality. Maybe, when you deviate too much from makes you special, you come up short. ‘Total soccer’ carried them a long way, ‘Title soccer’ left them a bit short.

Trevor Wachsman Resigns From MSSU Lions

Trevor Wachsman, Missouri Southern Lions (March 2007)

Trevor Wachsman, Missouri Southern Lions (March 2007)

Joplin, Mo. – Missouri Southern women’s soccer coach Trevor Wachsman has announced his resignation in order to take a job as an assistant coach at Division I Utah State University in Logan, Utah. Wachsman’s resignation is effective immediately.

He joins Heather Carins’ staff at Utah State where the Aggies were 10-9-1 last season and finished 5-2-1 in Western Athletic Conference play, good enough for second place in the league. The Aggies won the 2008 regular season WAC title.

“Leaving MSSU is bittersweet,” he said. “My wife and I have made this our home for seven years and have been grateful for the people in our lives. There are so many people that I owe my thanks and my appreciation to at Missouri Southern! I especially want to thank Sallie Beard for giving me the opportunity to become part of the MSSU family, and Kiley Cirillo and Alese Woolard for their guidance and assistance in all things soccer. But most of all, I would like to thank all of the players that I have had the pleasure of working with at Missouri Southern. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of individuals to spend time with. I wish the Women’s soccer program and MSSU athletics my best.”

Missouri Southern will begin an immediate national search for Wachsman’s successor.

Wachsman coached seven seasons at Southern, ending his tenure as the winningest coach in Lions history and helping the team to its first-ever national ranking and appearance in an NCAA Division II Regional when the team went 11-4-5 in 2006 and finished in second place in the MIAA with a 9-2-3 mark.

Spain vs Germany Today At Farmers Gastropub

What a match up eh. Everyone thought Argentina vs Germany would determine the champion, but after the dismantling of the South American team it’s hard to tell whether they were truly challengers. Now it seems this match is considered the key game. Of course there’s always the actual final, this Sunday at 1:30 pm, and I’ll be at Farmer’s Gastropub to enjoy the action as the Dutch face…. who?

I used to hold German citizenship, having been born in Munich, so it’s hard to root against the boys but I did pick Spain prior to the start of the World Cup so it would be satisfying to see that result as well. And how can anyone root against Netherlands? So as my buddy Brad mentioned once the USA went out, “Cool, now I can quit worrying and just enjoy some fantastic soccer”.

Here’s my usual survey of what other’s are saying. What about you?

NY Times – Octopus Picks Spain, German Fans Despair

For Spain, the Guardian explores Why David Villa is carrying Spain’s hopes on his shoulders while also noting that Are Spain the most one-club-reliant team in World Cup history? after fielding seven Barcelona players on the field against Paraguay at one point.

For Germany, it seems Joachim Löw’s young Germany have nothing to lose as Germany reap reward of great shift to youth, something begun after they lost to Spain in the final of Euro 2008 but his employers instituted the reforms that have produced more speed, more skill and fresh tactical intelligence after the premature exit at Euro 2000.

Finally, keep an eye on Miroslav Klose threatens to eclipse goalscoring gods.

US Women Face Sweden In Omaha Tuesday July 13th

Alie Krieger, FFC Frankfurt

Alie Krieger, FFC Frankfurt

CHICAGO (June 28, 2010) – U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Pia Sundhage has called up 24 players for the USA’s two matches against Sweden taking place on July 13 in Omaha, Neb. at Creighton University’s Morrison Stadium, live on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. CT, and on July 17 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn., live on Fox Soccer Channel at 6:30 p.m. CT.

Tickets for both matches start at $18 and are on sale through ussoccer.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000 and at all Ticketmaster ticket centers throughout the local areas. Groups of 20 or more can obtain an order form at ussoccer.com or call 312-528-1290.

The USA and Sweden, home country of U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage, have met three times since Sundhage took over the helm of the U.S. team, with the USA winning twice and tying once. The draw came in the championship game of the 2009 Algarve Cup in Portugal, a match in which the USA eventually fell after penalty kicks.

“Sweden is one of the world’s high-ranked teams and we have not played very well against them the last couple of times, so that will inspire our players to play well,” said Sundhage. “It is always good to play against a top European team and defensively it will be good to see how we do against the fast and clever players that Sweden has up top. We also get to play two games, so some players who maybe have not gotten to play 90 minutes in a while for the national team may get to play an entire game.”

Twenty-two of the 24 players called up come from WPS; the exceptions being forward Alex Morgan, a rising senior at California, and FFC Frankfurt defender Ali Krieger, the only foreign-based player currently in the U.S. WNT player pool. Against Germany in May, Krieger played her first match for the USA since January of 2008. Krieger is a graduate of Penn State where she won 4 straight Big Ten titles while playing for Ann Cook (Glendale), a Penn State Assistant.

Shelby Stewart Named Female High School Athlete of the Year

Parkview Vikings, April 2010

Parkview Vikings, April 2010

Stewart has been named Female Prep Athlete of the Year by the News-Leader high school sports reporters. Shelby is #21 in this photo, with Melanie Allen, Holly Messick, Jessica Maerz & Kelsey Loderhose in the background, seen celebrating a late game-winner over Camdenton in April this year.

In addition to her skill, Stewart, a forward who will play soccer at Missouri State, also is known for her loyalty.

Upon entering high school, Stewart could have played four years of soccer had she chosen to attend Kickapoo, her neighborhood school. But Stewart decided to stay with her friends and go to Parkview, despite having to sit out a season because of a transfer rule. In doing so, Stewart chose a school with a less-established soccer program.

It wouldn’t be the last time Stewart, 18, would stay true to her friends when other options were out there.

Well done Shelby. I’m looking forward to covering your contributions to the Lady Bears for the next four years!

We’ve reached the Quarterfinal stage and I barely know what to do with my time. Actually I do, a couple of patient clients are expecting to hear from me today! So we have a couple of days to be productive before getting an early start to the holiday weekend with some great games expected. Farmer’s Gastropub will be open for all four of the games so come downtown for good food and fine futbol.

Friday
9:00 am – Brazil vs. Netherlands (ESPN)
1:30 pm – Ghana vs. Uruguay (ESPN)

Saturday
9:00 am – Argentina vs. Germany (ABC)
1:30 pm – Spain vs. Paraguay (ABC)

I’d love to see the Dutch advance as well as Spain. Argentina is the favorite of Soccer America. Sports Illustrated seems to think that Spain again looks like its old self while the world wonder’s Is Maradona’s Madness Working?

Of course, it could be a simple case of a Nike Curse while Adida’s predicted the future.

Watch Party at Farmer’s Gastropub – USA vs Ghana

Time for a little retrospection. I am trying to be happy with the US results, knowing that two weeks ago I would be happy knowing our boys would reach the knockout round. I’m still trying to understand the two different teams we saw throughout this tournament as well though – whether dominating a strong physical side during the 2nd half of the Ghana match, or the clueless ineffectual side that gave up early goals. I’ve been a fan of Coach Bradley for many years, from 1998 when he took the Chicago Fire to the double in their first year of existence. I’ll leave the analysis of his work in this World Cup to others. Links below.

In the meantime, there were several things I loved.

Bill Griffiths, Farmer's Gastropub (on right)

Bill Griffiths, Farmer’s Gastropub (on right)

Bill Griffiths and his staff at Farmer’s Gastropub for one. Finally a restaurant/pub that embraced the futbol community and offered us a fantastic environment for enjoying the game. He’ll continue this efforts throughout the tournament (there were 3 dozen here for England vs Germany this morning). Come out for a game or enjoy the wonderful menus they create from locally grown products. It really is a treat and the outdoor patio offers a nice, shaded environment in the evenings.

If you made it to Farmers, or didn’t but appreciate what Bill helped create, please consider visiting soon. Be certain to let him know that you how you feel. We owe him our support.

The community was wonderful. Every day the crowds grew larger as the word got out about the great environment Farmer’s Gastropub has fostered. For the folks who came out to share in that spirit, but were less savvy about the soccer, the opportunity to discover our game was great. A few comments culled from my Twitter feed during the event include:

* It feels like we are in a bigger city, or a different country, or both.
* Hosting a pretty kickass party @farmerspub if you aren’t here you are missing out!
* okay i’m watching it, too. and i’ll admit that soccer does a couple of things right: narrative tension and patriotic frenzy. #USA

About that patriotic frenzy, check out the National Anthem prior to the game
