7,000!

Question: What has four arms, four legs, two heads, and has scored over 7,000 points in high school?

Answer: Hannah Wilkerson and Fred Johnson.

Lost in the fantastic girls final Friday night at Sarcoxie was another record for Miller’s Hannah Wilkerson.  Having already become the highest scoring girls basketball player in Missouri history, Hannah’s 43 point performance in the Lady Cardinals 62-60 overtime win over Purdy gave her possession of another state scoring mark.  Fred Johnson’s overall state scoring record of 3,552 points.  A record that had stood since 1986 and that I thought was quite safe up until last year.  But with 3,571 points and counting, Hannah seems determined to make her record stand another 20+ years.

And after the completion of the game, who was waiting to meet and congratulate the new record holder but Fred himself.

Hannah Wilkerson and Fred Johnson

Many of you may remember Fred playing at SMSU during the 1989 & 90 seasons.  He still lives in the area, has been following Hannah’s scoring exploits, and wanted to meet the young lady that seemed destined to supplant him atop the state’s all-time scoring list.  He was informed that Hannah was due to break the record so Fred made the journey to Sarcoxie Friday night.  After the game, a reader snapped this photo of the two greatest scorers in state history together, and was kind enough to send it on to me to share with you.

A fantastic night for Hannah and Miller, a wonderful gesture from the great Fred Johnson, and a one of a kind moment captured on film.
