Clever & Miller watch as Jeremy Dresslaer hits two of his 30 points

Clever & Miller watch as Jeremy Dresslaer hits two of his 30 points

Saw a great early season game tonight in Miller as the Cardinals took on Clever.  Clever was fresh off a championship in their own tournament while it was the first game of the season for Miller.  The Cardinals jumped out to an 11-7 lead midway through the first period as Justin Jack hit two early 3-pointers.  From there, Clever went on a 14-0 that extended into the second period.  But now down 21-11, Miller responded with their own 8-0 run to get back in the game and they went to halftime with Clever leading 23-21.  Miller had to feel good being down only 2 as they shot an abysmal 6 of 27 from the field in the first half.

The second half started with Derek Jack scoring to tie the game at 23 apiece.  But Clever’s shooting was hot tonight and they regained the lead and held it until late in the fourth quarter.  Jeremy Dresslaer was not just hot, he was blistering from the field as he ended the evening  with 14 of 17 shooting.  But Miller never let the Clever lead get above six an kept fighting back.  Finally tying the game at 53 with under a minute left as Justin Jack scored the last of his 22 points.  Clever held for the last shot, Dresslaer was fouled driving to the basket, and went to the line with just over 5 seconds left.  He missed the first free throw but hit the second.  The inbounds pass was stolen by Clever’s Michael Reeves who was immediately fouled with 3.3 seconds now left.  Reeves missed both free throws but that resulted in a heave from beyond half court by Jack that was off the mark allowing Clever to claim the 54-53 victory.

Clever was lead by Dresslaer’s 30 points and Joey Smith double double of 19 points and 16 rebounds.  The Blue Jays shot 56.1% from the field, but missed 5 of 6 free throws in the final two minutes with a chance to seal the game.  Justin Jack had 22 points and 12 rebounds for Miller who recovered from their first half shooting woes to shoot a respectable 48.1% in the second half.  Clever also won the rebounding battle 26-25.  Not a bad start for Miller who should be able to build off this game.  Clever can feel good about getting a solid road win against a tough opponent.  And I got to enjoy every minute of it.

In other action, Branson won the other big matchup of the night as they overcame a 44-39 halftime deficit to down Glendale 79-74.  Five Pirates scored in double figures to offset the 21 points of Glendale’s Cameron Johnson.  And Pleasant Hope and Conway had the shootout of the night with Pleasant Hope winning 90-88.  Eric Sechler had 36 and Matt Brown 34 for the Pirates.
